Intent to Teach: Perspectives from Pre-Service Agricultural Education Teachers

Historically, less than two-thirds of all newly certified agricultural education students enter the school-based (SBAE) teaching profession. Teacher educators must understand preservice teachers’ intention to teach help fulfill demand for SBAE teachers. This study examines motivations consider a career in eight Oklahoma State University pre-service teachers early, mid, and late stages their teacher coursework. Qualitative methods were employed describe these individuals’ SBAE. Interviews artifacts form participant autobiographies collected analyzed. Intent was tied following six categories: expectations profession, love FFA, need relevant instruction, community, variety learning environments, intent, which framed according theory planned behavior (Ajzen, 1991.
